Rock Camp was founded in 2007 by brothers Brian & Kevin Hickey. Both organisers are experienced musicians and songwriters and have performed in the Irish and UK music scenes. Their band, Cabrini Green, has independently released 2 EPs and an album and has received extensive airplay on Irish Radio.
Brian’s background is originally in graphic design and he is a co-founder of Emagine Media, a design company specialising in web design and graphic design for the music industry. Brian is an experienced guitarist and songwriter who has devoted much of his spare time to pursuing a music career. With over 18 years behind him as a musician, he has recorded and performed in many of Dublin’s music venues, including Vicar Street, The Village and Whelan’s.
As a music fan, Brian has attended literally hundreds of gigs, in all sizes of venues and has witnessed some of the worlds biggest bands perform live.
In his design career, he has produced designs for artists such as Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers), Television, The Section Quartet (Led Zeppelin Unplugged), Pugwash and many irish artists including The Divine Comedy and Paul Brady. Brian has designed everything from album covers to e-commerce websites and has many years experience designing promotional collateral for Irish and international bands.
Kevin is a graduate of the Walton’s School of Music, achieving grade 6 in guitar. He has also completed Parts 1 and 2 of Pulse Studio’s Sound Engineering Course. Kevin is one of the few people in Ireland to have studied and completed Pro Tools 101, 201 and 210.
As a musician, Kevin has performed and recorded both as a solo artist and as a member of many groups. His experience on stage is matched only by his skill behind the control console in a recording studio. Kevin has developed a mobile studio which Rock Camp students use to record their demos.
Reviewed in The Ticket, March 30th 2007
Brian and Kevin’s band, Cabrini Green, released their debut album in March 2007. It was reviewed by Tony Clayton Lea in the Ticket and here’s a sample of what he had to say.
...the overall sound is of a group of people that has ingested the combined outpourings of The Flaming Lips, Explosions in the Sky, Radiohead and The Beatles. In other words, while experimentation is never too far away (though it is never too ostentatious either), neither is a keen sense of structure, cohesiveness and melody. We like. Very much.
